OSHA STAND-DOWN PROMOTES SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENTS

In light of the significant number of workplace accidents occurring recently at Oklahoma oil and gas fields, OSHA’s Oklahoma-area office has partnered with the MCEPS Network to sponsor a “Safety Stand-Down” at oil and gas exploration sites in Oklahoma. The Safety Stand-Down runs from June 22 to July 20, 2012, and encourages employers and oil and gas field supervisors to voluntarily stop work to conduct site inspections and safety and health training for workers. The oil and gas industry is inherently dangerous, exposing workers to serious and even life-threatening risks every time they set foot on the job site. Without a safe work environment and adequate safety measures in place, oil and gas workers’ lives are put at an unreasonable risk on a daily basis.

Too often, devastating work injuries and fatalities in Oklahoma are caused by avoidable factors like inadequate training, improper safety precautions and insufficient oversight on the part of employers or supervisors. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was established for the sole purpose of assuring “safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.” With the proactive Safety Stand-Down measure, oil and gas field employers can put their time and effort into ensuring the safety of job sites and protecting the well-being of their employees.
