Defective Product Attorneys at AMA Law Warn of Spike in Painkiller Deaths from Fentanyl Overdoses
In light of the recent deaths of fifteen people in Australia from fentanyl overdoses, the defective product attorneys at AMA Law are warning consumers in Oklahoma and across the United States about the risk of severe and potentially fatal side effects associated with the potent narcotic pain patch. The growing number of fetanyl overdose and side effect reports has led to a recall of several different models of pain patches, including a fentanyl transdermal system manufactured by Watson Pharmaceuticals. If you used the fentanyl pain patch and have since experienced an adverse side effect, or if you lost a loved one to what you believe may have been a fatal fentanyl complication, contact our experienced fentanyl side effect attorneys at AMA Law today. You may have grounds to file a product liability lawsuit against Watson Pharmaceuticals, in order to pursue financial compensation for your losses.
FDA WARNINGS FOR FENTANYL COMPLICATIONS AND DEATHS
Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice reminding patients, caregivers and doctors about the importance of properly storing, using, applying and disposing of fentanyl pain patches – including Duragesic and generic products – to prevent potentially life-threatening harm associated with accidental exposure to the active ingredient, fentanyl. The FDA issued similar fentanyl warnings in 2005 and 2006, following reports of death and life-threatening adverse events related to fentanyl overdoses. These adverse events occurred when the fentanyl pain patch was used in patients who were not tolerant to opioids, and in opioid-tolerant patients who changed the patch too frequently, applied more patches than prescribed, or exposed the patch to a heart source. In its April 2012 notice, the FDA warned that young children in particular are at risk of accidental exposure to fentanyl pain patches, which can lead to serious side effects and possibly even death.

Fentanyl is a synthetic narcotic analgesic commonly used for outpatient pain management, and also commonly used as a surgical anesthetic and pain reliever. For outpatients suffering from chronic pain, fentanyl – which is 80 to 100 times more powerful than morphine based on weight – is administered through a patch placed directly on the skin. Unfortunately, despite the painkiller benefits of fentanyl, a number of patient deaths have been reported in connection with the powerful fentanyl pain patch. In fact, as of 2005, the FDA had received reports of more than 125 deaths related to fentanyl overdoses. If you have experienced a serious side effect that you believe to be associated with the fentanyl pain patch, contact our knowledgeable fentanyl side effect lawyers at AMA Law for legal help.
