Anti-Texting While Driving Campaign Making its Way Across Oklahoma

Approximately 350 students in Enid, Oklahoma heard an anti-texting and driving message on Wednesday as part of a campaign that AT&T plans to bring to schools and organizations nationwide. According to Sandra Robinett, AT&T’s regional manager, the public-awareness campaign has actually been part of the company platform since 2010, and the company hopes making these appearances and appealing to teen drivers will help reduce the incidence of Oklahoma car accidents caused by texting and driving. In 2009, approximately 450,000 individuals were injured in car accidents caused by distracted driving, and 5,474 of those injuries proved to be fatal. Statistics provided by the federal government indicate that cell phone use contributed to close to 20% of those deaths and 5% of the total injuries. “STOP, DROP & DRIVE” ANTI-TEXTING CAMPAIGN

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol teamed up with AT&T to promote the national No Text on Board pledge day on Wednesday, and marquees were posted on Tulsa and Oklahoma City highways urging drivers not to text and drive. This weekend, “Generation tXt” students will be knocking on doors across Oklahoma, encouraging registered voters to support a ban on texting while driving for all motorists in the state. “It doesn’t matter if they are the most experienced driver or texter, it still affects your skills and driving,” said one Generation tXt member. “It costs your life or someone else’s, and it’s not okay.” In support of this message, teens across Oklahoma are encouraging drivers of all ages to “Stop, Drop & Drive,” and are proposing a bill to make it illegal for anyone to text and drive in Oklahoma.

Washington students founded the Generation tXt program three years ago to promote safe driving behavior with an emphasis on the dangers of texting while driving. Generation tXt members hope that by knocking on doors, they will gather 5,000 signatures from registered voters supporting a state-wide ban on texting while driving. Once the signatures are collected, the students will present them in a letter to lawmakers asking for it to be made a misdemeanor crime to text and drive.
