Five Texas teens were killed in a fiery accident this week when their SUV collided with a tanker truck loaded with fuel, and the devastating accident is only one example of the increasing trend of traffic fatalities involving teen drivers, despite statistics indicating that fatal crashes among teens have declined over the past decade. In fact, the deaths of the five teens in Texas came on the same day as a crash in Ohio that killed six teenagers, and one day before an accident in Illinois that killed four. Three teenagers were also killed in Indiana on March 8, when two pickup trucks ran a four-way stop and collided. TRAFFIC ACCIDENT DEATHS INVOLVING TEENS
These deadly traffic accidents serve as reminders of the dangers of teen driving, and contradict the findings of a recent Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) report indicating that fatal crashes involving teens have dropped over the past ten years. With more stringent restrictions imposed on teen drivers, including limits on driving at night and with other teen passengers, overall teen driving deaths are significantly lower than they were a decade ago. In fact, the GHSA report noted that deaths of young passengers when the driver was between 15 and 20 years old have dropped considerably since 1982, when 1,898 riders within the same age range were killed. In 2011, this rate dropped to 777. The GHSA report did, however, note that the rate of teen traffic deaths increased dramatically during the first six months of 2012, reversing a ten-year trend.
