The types of injuries that are common during the holidays range from cooking accidents to electrical fires, falls from ladders, car accidents, and so on. With this in mind, it is of the utmost importance that you do what you can to keep both you and your loved ones safe during this busy time of year. Let’s now take a look at some of the most common types of injuries that we see during the holiday season:
- Fall-Related Injuries – One of the most common types of injuries we see this time of year are those sustained from falls, often from putting up lights and other holiday decorations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 6,000 people visit the ER to be treated for falls sustained while putting up holiday decorations. In order to protect yourself, make sure you inspect all ladders and step stools before using them and always have someone spot you.
- Injuries from Fires – Fires are another common source of injuries during the holidays. Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NEPA) indicate that 30 percent of all home fires and 38 percent of all home fire deaths occur during the holidays. There are numerous factors that contribute to home fires, from cooking equipment to tree mishaps and problems with decorative lights.
- Drunk Driving Accidents – During the holidays we also see a surge in the number of alcohol-related car accidents. Because of this, December has been deemed National Impaired Driving Prevention month. If you are hosting a holiday party, make sure you take preventative measures to ensure your guests stay safe, such as providing sleeping arrangements or encouraging they use services like Uber.
- Lacerations and Cuts – We also see a heightened number of lacerations and cuts during the holidays, often from opening gifts. As silly as this sounds, it is a serious problem. In fact, an estimated 6,000 people are treated in the ER every year for gift-related injuries. Be sure and take great care when opening gifts this holiday season and avoid using sharp objects that could damage your hands.
