Yet another Mirena lawsuit has been filed against Bayer, by a woman who claims that she has suffered multiple side effects since she was first implanted with the medical device maker’s birth control device. In the lawsuit, filed on February 19 in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois, plaintiff Brooklynn Hayes claims that, even after having the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) surgically removed, she continues to suffer from pain, impairment and a diminished quality of life. Hayes also claims that she was not aware of the possible risks associated with the birth control device until after she suffered the side effects. If you have suffered a major side effect that you believe to have been caused by Bayer’s Mirena IUD, consult our reputable lawyers at AMA Law today for legal help.
ALLEGED MIRENA COMPLICATIONS MAY BE LONG-LASTING
According to Hayes, she had the Mirena IUD device implanted in May 2008, at the Will County Health Department in Illinois. The procedure was performed without any complications, and later tests showed that the birth control device was properly inserted into Hayes’ uterus. In April 2010 however, Hayes began to experience severe pain in her lower abdomen, and diagnostic testing showed that she had suffered perforation of the uterus and migration of the IUD. As a result, Hayes had the device surgically removed, which required hospitalization and ongoing medical monitoring and treatment. Even now, nearly three years later, Hayes claims that she continues to suffer from pain and bodily impairment associated with the alleged Mirena IUD side effects.
SIDE EFFECTS POSSIBLY CAUSED BY MIRENA
Hayes’ complaint joins a growing number of lawsuits filed against Bayer over its Mirena implantable birth control device. Mirena was first approved by the FDA in 2009 as a method of pregnancy prevention, and the T-shaped device is inserted into the uterus, where it releases a steady dose of a prescription drug that functions as a contraceptive. Although the device is designed to remain in place for up to five years, many women who have had Mirena implanted in their bodies have experienced complications requiring surgical removal after only a few years. In Hayes’ and other cases, the device perforates the uterus and migrates out of its original position to other parts of the body. This can cause serious side effects like significant pain, bleeding and possibly even organ damage.

In some cases, complications allegedly caused by the Mirena IUD may last long after the device is removed, and may even prevent some women from having children after using this method of birth control. Although the Mirena warning label does include information about possible migration of the device, it only mentions situations where the uterus is perforated during insertion. The label does not warn patients of the risk of spontaneous migration, where the IUD changes position long after the device is inserted, as many women allege has happened to them.
