CONSEQUENCES OF WORK VEHICLE ACCIDENTS
In its report, NCCI indicated that the frequency of large truck accidents declined 16% from 2007 to 2010, while accidents involving passenger cars declined 8% during the same period. According to the report, the recession left fewer motorists on the road due to unemployment, and resulted in fewer shipments with commercial trucks as the recession limited consumer spending. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the trend likely had a positive impact on workers’ compensation, as the rate of lost-time claims resulting from nonfatal vehicle accidents fell from 3.5% of all traffic accidents in 2005 to 3.1% in 2010. Vehicle accidents tend to create more costly workers’ comp claims than the average on-the-job accident, according to the NCCI. These accidents accounted for 2% of workers’ comp claims from 2002 to 2008, but made up more than 7% of losses during that time, the NCCI reported.

In an effort to reduce the risk of work vehicle accidents in Oklahoma and throughout the United States, NCCI says that employers in all industries should create safe driving procedures that can help prevent workers’ comp claims from work vehicle-related collisions.
