An Oklahoma woman suffered injuries in an alcohol-related accident that took place near Sallisaw on December 22, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Sixty-seven-year-old Marilyn Ann Ater was riding in a pickup truck driven by her husband when their vehicle was struck by a car driven by 70-year-old Henry Mac Ellis, who was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time. Ellis died at St. Francis Hospital following the accident, and Marilyn Ater was treated for her injuries at St. Edward’s Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas, troopers reported. DUI AND DUI-CAUSED ACCIDENTS IN OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma police reported that the car accident occurred when Ellis, who was traveling northbound on a county road just east of Sallisaw, failed to yield to a stop sign and crashed into James Richard Ater’s eastbound pickup. Troopers who responded to the collision reported Ellis as being impaired at the time of the crash, and attributed the cause of the car accident to driving under the influence of alcohol. Unfortunately, despite efforts to curb DUI accidents in Oklahoma, alcohol-related collisions occur frequently across the state. In fact, in 2008 alone, Oklahoma saw 212 fatal accidents where at least one driver had a BAC (blood alcohol content) of 0.08% or higher. Although 0.08% is the legal limit in Oklahoma, 29 Oklahomans were killed in car accidents where at least one driver had a BAC between 0.01% and 0.07% – which is considered legal.
