Unfortunately, domestic violence is an all-too common occurrence in the United States and worldwide. Both domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone; it does not discriminate and there are no rules as to when it can happen, or why, in a relationship. Domestic violence crosses all ethnic, social, and economic levels and can be psychological, physical, or emotional. Understanding and acknowledging the signs of domestic violence is the first step to putting an end to it.
It is important to note that signs of domestic violence are oftentimes overlooked, denied, or excused. However, there is never an excuse for this kind of behavior. One of the best ways to work towards ending domestic violence is to be aware of the signs and do your best to never turn a blind eye. Below we will go over some of the most common signs of domestic violence. If you are concerned about the well-being or relationship of someone you love, please consider these warning signs of abuse:
- A jealous or possessive partner
- Being overly eager to please the abuser
- Frequently checking in with an abusive partner
- Frequent injuries accompanied by claims of “accidents”
- Inconsistent attendance at work, school, or other social functions
- Wearing clothing or accessories to hide signs of physical abuse
- Low self-esteem and self-worth
- Limited access to friends
The following are internal signs of abuse that you should be aware of. If your partner is doing any of these things, you may be involved in an abusive relationship:
- Telling you that you can never do anything right
- Showing jealousy of your friends and time separated
- Embarrassing you or shaming you with put-downs

- Taking your money or refusing to give you money

- Controlling who you see, where you go, and what you do with your free time
- Preventing you from making your own decisions
- Preventing you from working or attending school
- Destroying your property
- Threatening to hurt or kill your pets
- Intimidating you with guns, knives, or other weapons
