Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) and other state officials reported on December 5 to the scene of an Oklahoma truck accident, in which a FedEx truck carrying two trailers collided with two state maintenance vehicles north of Adair, Oklahoma. The driver of the FedEx truck was bleeding on his legs and one arm from injuries sustained in the crash, and the driver of the first maintenance truck to be hit sustained a serious head injury and complained that he was unable to see. Adair firefighters rescued the FedEx driver, who was pinned inside the cab of his truck, and both injured drivers were transported to the hospital for treatment. ACCIDENT POSSIBLY CAUSED BY DISTRACTED TRUCK DRIVER
According to police reports, the FedEx truck involved in the serious collision struck from behind a maintenance truck that was carrying a flashing sign warning motorists of maintenance work ahead. The maintenance vehicle flipped on its side after being hit, and then collided with a truck carrying asphalt that was being used to patch the highway. Witnesses to the three-vehicle accident reported that the driver of the FedEx truck had a cell phone in his hand after the crash, and asked another woman to call his wife in Missouri to let her know that he had been in an accident and was being transported to the hospital. The woman said she believed the Oklahoma truck accident occurred because the driver of the FedEx truck “might have been on his cell phone” at the time of the collision, not noticing the maintenance truck directly in front of him.
