DRIVER’S FAILURE TO YIELD RESULTS IN FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 64-year-old Terry Sadler was riding his motorcycle west on U.S. 62 in October, when he was struck by a Jeep at about 5:30 p.m. Troopers reported that the Oklahoma motorcycle accident occurred when the driver of the Jeep, 48-year-old Donna Perry, failed to yield when exiting a private drive and turning left to head east on U.S. 62. Following the accident, Sadler was airlifted in critical condition to St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, where he eventually succumbed to severe head and internal injuries, Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Perry, on the other hand, was treated and released from Cherokee Nation W.W. Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah, and her five-year-old passenger was not injured in the deadly collision.
IMPORTANCE OF MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AND AWARENESS
Despite efforts by law enforcement to reduce the risk of motorcycle accidents, Oklahoma still sees far too many motorcycle accident-related deaths across the state. In Oklahoma alone, 401 motorcycle riders were killed in devastating accidents between 2006 and 2010. Motorcycle riders in all states are forced to drive defensively at all times, due to the bigger and heavier vehicles they share the road with. Unfortunately, because motorcycles have a smaller profile than passenger cars and trucks and are less visible on Oklahoma roadways, motorcycle riders are at a higher risk of being involved in a serious accident. In addition, the small size of their vehicles makes motorcycle riders more vulnerable to fatal injuries when a collision does occur.
