PREVENTING MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT INJURIES
According to EMSA reports, there were 38 motor vehicle accidents in the metro on April 6, and many of them resulted in serious injuries or fatality for the motorists involved. “It’s been very, very busy,” said EMSA supervisor Susie Patterson. “I’ve heard probably at least over a dozen in the past few days.” For this reason, safety officials are urging motorcycle riders and drivers to remain cautious and alert on Oklahoma roadways, and motorcycle riders are being encouraged to wear helmets, more padding and high-visibility clothing to avoid devastating accidents.
STAYING ALERT IN OKLAHOMA ROADWAYS
Due to their small profile and the limited protection they afford riders, when motorcycles are involved in collisions with passenger cars or trucks, the motorcycle rider is typically the one who pays the price. “Anytime that you’re involved in a motorcycle crash, and you’re the motorcyclist, you’re going to lose 100% of the time,” said Betsy Randolph, a trooper with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. “Throttle control, breaking control, steering, avoiding things that are in the roadway,” said Randolph. “If you stay alert, we’re hoping that you’ll be able to stay alive.”
